This superb pair of wall lights is a work made in Ile de France around 1750. It is a large model with three lights, emblematic of the Rocaille, the fullness of the French Louis XV. In very finely chiseled bronze and gilded with mercury, these wall lights present a rich ornamentation based on a plant decoration, where asymmetry and luxuriance dominate. The exuberance of the scrolls is, however, perfectly mastered so that the balance of the lines is respected: French classicism remains the rule in this period of eventful curves, and separates this type of aesthetically perfect object from the more unbridled Rococo creations of Italian Baroque or German.
