Pair of Satinwood Corner Cupboards

Signed by Hubert HANSEN (Master in 1747) Transition Period, Louis XV-Louis XVI (1760-1774)

Transition period Louis XV – Louis XVI

Dimensions : H. 34 ¾ in. (88 cm) W. 26 ¾ in. (68 cm) D. 19 ¾ in. (50 cm)

Very nice pair of satinwood and amaranth corner cabinets. They open with a door presenting a marquetry of leafy branches and stylized flowers in "bois de bout", inscribed on a coat of arms itself placed in a reserve in amaranth.

On both sides of the door, a marquetry with geometric decoration of chevrons, separates them from the elegantly curved amounts and inlaid with simulated flutes.

They stand on four curved feet, with a central foot in the front to avoid the tilting of the corners when the door is opened. They are topped with beautiful marble from Alep.

These corner cabinets are stamped by Hubert Hansen, received master in 1747. He made many Louis XV and Transition period pieces of furniture of very good workmanship, and he is recognizable by his stylized marquetry in “bois de bout”. He used bronze ornaments only sparingly, as this model shows. He preferred to apply himself to the correctness of the proportions and to play with the contrasts of precious woods.

Inside, the doors are made of amaranth marquetry, and the removable shelves are still original. These corners have kept all their original frame, veneer, marble, bronzes and locks. However, there is some wear to the veneers called "à la perce"; this wear is common with 18th century "bois de bout" marquetry.
