Paul-Désiré Trouillebert was born in 1829 in Paris.

He is one of the greatest outdoor landscapers of the French 19th century. He is the artist closest to Corot both by the style of his painting and by the friendly relations the two painters maintained throughout their lives.

Trouillebert is attached to the school of Barbizon by his predilection for the motive of the landscape as well as for his style. He trained with the renowned portrait painter Ernest Hébert (1817-1908) and in the studio of Charles-François Jalabert (1819-1901). It is firstly for his portraits and nudes that Trouillebert is noticed: the portrait of Mademoiselle A. allows him to be accepted at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1865, where he will exhibit until 1884.

Trouillebert traveled a lot in France, especially in Brittany, the Loire and on the banks of the Seine. He joined the movement of traditionalist outdoor painters, as he affirmed in an interview with a journalist from L'Echo de Paris in 1890: "I only work from nature, I do not accept the study copied in the studio. »

Our painting is one of the most remarkable works of the artist. The diagonal composition is superb and the format is particularly large. The painting gives a great place to the sky and the water, while allowing the artist to stage a subject more complete than usual, with geese and a young farmer girl, the banks of the Loire River and many trees. The sky is beautifully rendered with moving clouds in a blue and gray sky. In the front, small white touches in a multitude of greens, come to illuminate a dense vegetation. The effects of transparency give the birches a particular vibration thanks to the typical ochre preparation of Trouillebert. This work is very complete, combining the finesse of the drawing and the strength of the material. Still on its original canvas, it is in a very good state of conservation. Finally, the painting is in its important original frame, gilded with leaf and perfectly restored.
